Karkloof Safari Spa

Karkloof Safari Spa

Of all the eco spots in South Africa, Karkloof Safari Spa is undoubtedly one of the best- if you can afford it.

This luxurious getaway is set on 3,500 hectares of untouched wildness - home to buffalos, rhinos, elephants, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra and nyala that roam freely throughout the property and a rich diversity of flora and birdlife.

Built with conservation in mind, the award-winning Karkloof Safari Spa is designed to be in harmony with the environment - incorporating elements of natural building using thatch, wood and stone.

There are 16 private villas dotted amongst the expansive savannahs and fertile valleys and streams of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, each individually and tastefully decorated.

Artists from the local community were commissioned to produce artworks for the central lodge and private villas, mostly using elements found on the property.

Karkloof Safari Spa takes you to a world of hassle-free luxury - king-sized beds to bury yourself in, deep-set bathtubs, air conditioning, underfloor heating and other modern conveniences and a large viewing deck where you can relax, sundowner in hand.

With the absence of the usual predators, game viewing here is prolific - guests have their own private safari vehicle available any time of the day (and for any length of time) to discover the wonders of a thriving conservation area.

The price of a one-night stay includes all activities, gourmet food (including a healthy raw food menu) and alcohol (except for French Champagne) so you can sit back and enjoy all the area has to offer. You can even arrange a late check-out so you get 2 full days’ worth of activities in.

The Karkloof Spa takes you straight back to Thailand - with highly-trained Thai therapists offering treatments that only use organic, all-natural and biodegradable products.

There’s also qualified nutritionists and fitness instructors on hand to help you correct your lifestyle and reach your ideal weight.

The Spa, open 24 hours a day, has 17 different treatment rooms interlinked with thatch-covered eco-friendly boardwalks, and sports a Roman bath, sauna and steam rooms (check out their own Dead Sea salt indoor pool!)

If safaris and spa treatments aren’t entertainment enough, Karkloof Safari Spa offers guided historical or bush walks (self-guided trails also available), daily yoga, trips to one of 5 waterfalls on the property, indulgent bush picnics, mountain biking or fishing.

With so much to see and do, combined with exceptional service and attention to detail, Karkloof Safari Spa is the destination for the luxury eco-traveller.

What makes it eco?

Karkloof Safari Spa is a conservation area where wildlife can roam freely across 3,500 hectares, and where alien vegetation is constantly replaced with indigenous flora.

Utilising elements of natural building in their design, including thatch, wood and stone (buildings also sport a living roof which has soil and plants on top to aid in natural cooling and provide a living habitat), the lodge supports the local economy by buying locally where possible and purchasing its artwork from local artists.

With food picked fresh from their organic, pesticide-free vegetable garden, Karkloof Safari Spa caters for any type of diet (with an earth-friendly raw vegan option available for each menu item).

The lodge also keeps its carbon impact minimal with energy-saving bulbs, electric vehicles and water conservation measures.
