Permaculture Design Courses South Africa

Permaculture Design Courses happen fairly frequently in South Africa, as do Intro to Permaculture courses, but where do you find out about them? There doesn't seem to be a place where you can find out what's happening and where!

So, after numerous readers contacted me requesting information on courses in SA, I decided to put together a "Permaculture Design Courses South Africa" (now there's a mouthful!) page myself.

I'll do my best to keep the information updated, but please do share it with anyone who might be interested. Good luck with your permaculture adventure!

Eastern Cape

Naturally I have to start with my homeland and the legacy of my very first permaculture teacher, Hazel Mugford. Though Hazel recently passed away, her son Andrew continues her incredible work, with lots of fun games, practical work and activities. Andrew's passion and enthusiasm is boundless and very inspirational.

  • Terra Khaya Backpackers, Hogsback

I've stayed at Terra Khaya and love the work they're doing - it's intuitively in harmony with nature. Natural buildings, permaculture gardens, compost toilets - it's sustainable living in a nutshell. They take in volunteers and occasionally run permaculture courses.

Course dates are dependent on number of participants (group bookings preferred). They are also selling plots of land for communal living. Check out their site for more

  • Ukuvuna Urban Farming - John Nzira

John Nzira of Ukuvuna Urban Farming is probably one of the best teachers I've come across yet (and I've met several!). He trained with Bill Mollison himself and his knowledge is comprehensive. He runs regular one-day intro workshops and is running a PDC this year (more info coming soon). If you can organise to go to one of his workshops or courses, he is amazing.

Contact Engela J v Rensburg on or +27 (0)83-445-2072 for more information.

  • Permaculture Garden Layout and Design Workshops - Jamie Shepherd

I haven't yet met Jamie Shepherd, though we have corresponded, but I visited the 188 food gardens project in Khula Village and was impressed with Jamie Shepherd's style. He runs permaculture design courses and workshops in the Joburg area.

12 day Permaculture Design Course, Correspondence - Any time

Cost: R 4181(tuition only)

Practical weekends: Own accommodation and lunch

This 12-day Permaculture Design Course, facilitated by Jamie Shepherd, is run as a Correspondence Course, which includes practical and interactive weekends where you can practice what you've learnt. Essentially, when each group of 8 students have completed all their assignments and have a good understanding, they will be invited to the weekend workshops in Fourways, Gauteng.

Lectures and assignments will be sent to you over a period of 8 weeks, and there's no time-limit for completing assignments. What this means, is that Jamie will continue coaching you until you fully understand the theory and practice!

  • Happy Toes Permaculture Farm - Byron Moriarty

I personally visited Happy Toes, just outside of Zeerust and the quirky little town of Groot Marico. You can't help but be swept away by Byron Moriarty's enthusiasm - an attribute that will make him a great teacher. Living off-the-grid and treading lightly, you'll learn a lot at Happy Toes.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be very many courses that I'm aware of in KZN. Please do inform me if you know of anything happening in 2016, and of course I'll endeavour to find out as well :-)

  • Dovehouse Organics

I visited Dovehouse Organics as we travelled through the Midlands and was fascinated to see large-scale organic farming based on permaculture principles in action. It's probably one of the best examples of a holistic permaculture project - there's the farm which sells produce all over KZN, a health shop and restaurant specialising in healthy, organic and raw food, as well as an education centre.

Owner Paul Duncan and his facilitators are doing incredible work training local, small scale farmers in permaculture, as well as learners, teachers, students, NGOs and other interested parties.

They also run numerous workshops, raw food classes, green drinks evenings and more.

Visit their site to find out more or contact Paul Duncan: 084 292 4354 or email
