Simonskloof Mountain Retreat

Cottage amidst fynbos

A scenic 2.5 hours drive from Cape Town, nestled deep in the Langeberg Mountains, lies Simonskloof Mountain Retreat, offering farm-style eco-friendly accommodation in three colourful cottages.

A far cry from the madness of city life, Simonskloof is an off-the-grid mountain retreat that prides itself on its 'down to earth' ethos and responsible eco tourism practices.

Choose between one of three cottages dotted amidst the stunning Koo Valley: Eric's Place, the original (but restored) farm house which sleeps six in three sprawling bedrooms, Faraway Cottage (sleeps four in 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 2 single) and Orange Cottage (sleeps six in 2 bedrooms: 1 double, four bunks).

There's also 8 private and individual campsites found near the 230 year old oak tree - and under a star-lit sky.

Self-cater or choose DBB (dinner, bed and breakfast option) for scrumptious food prepared on an open fire, successfully combining African and Swiss cuisine.

Expect funky minimalism, timber floors and colourful walls, mosquito-net-draped beds and bedside tables made of repurposed fruit crates, while the occasional agricultural tool adds to the rustic unfussy decor of the farmhouse (Eric's Place).

The cottages (made from renovated labourer homes) have Dover stoves, reed ceilings and even an outdoor cast-iron bath.

What makes it special?

A proud member of Conservation at Work (The Western Cape umbrella association which facilitates the conservation of private land), Simonskloof Mountain Retreat covers a sprawling 2000 hectares on the divide of the Succulent Karoo/Renosterveld and Mountain Fynbos biospheres, making it paradise for outdoorsy types.

Look out for a variety of Proteas, Buchu and medicinal plants, wildlife such as Rhebok, Klipspringer, Leopards, Mountain tortoises, Porcupine, Genet, Caracals, black eagles and a host of other birds.

Your Swiss-born host Jurgen can guide you to some of the best Kloofing the area is famed for, or direct you to one of the well-marked hiking trails.

Other activities include guided canyoneering, abseiling/rappelling, mountain biking, swimming and bird-watching - or even zip-lining just 15 km away.

The farm even takes in volunteers (WOOFERS) if you simply can't tear yourself away.

Why is it Eco?

Simonskloof is eco in all the right places. No chemicals have been used on the farm for over 35 years, there's no electricity (with ample supply of candles and paraffin lanterns), food is cooked on wood-fired Dover stoves or on the outdoor fireplace, water is solar or gas heated and toilets are composting ones.

Drinking water comes from a spring and all household waste water (greywater) is used on the organic herb and vegetable garden.
